List the immediate obligations
Consider intended services, burial or cremation, travel, unpaid medical or household bills, legal and administrative costs, and time family members may take away from work.
Subtract dedicated resources
Existing coverage and money specifically reserved for final arrangements may reduce the remaining need. Do not count assets the family cannot access quickly without disruption.
Choose sustainable coverage
A policy that lapses because the premium was not sustainable cannot fulfill its purpose. Health, age, product type, waiting periods, and budget all matter.

Insurance products, riders, values, costs, and availability vary by carrier, policy, state, and individual eligibility. Policy loans and withdrawals reduce available cash value and death benefits and may create tax consequences if a policy lapses or is surrendered.
